Common FTP problems
When you upload files to your web space, you may encounter problems that have a simple solution. This guide will assist you to resolve those problems.
The following steps can assist with troubleshooting FTP issues:
- Open Internet Explorer
- In the address bar, enter ftp://www.your-domain.com/public_html/
- Enter your FTP username and password when prompted for it
- Once connected, files can be transferred by dragging them into the Internet Explorer window, or alternatively by copying the files and pasting them into the Internet Explorer window
(where ‘your-domain.com’ is the name of your registered domain with Hetzner)
Should you receive connection errors when entering ftp://www.domain-name/public_html/ into your Internet Explorer window, you might need to make an adjustment to your Windows Internet Options.
- From an open Internet Explorer window, choose ‘Internet Options’ from the ‘Tools’ menu.
- Click on the ‘Advanced’ tab in the ‘Internet Options’ window. About halfway down the window is an option for Passive FTP. Enable this setting and click on the ‘Apply’ and ‘OK’ buttons.
- Close all Internet Explorer windows.
- Open Internet Explorer and try connecting to ftp://www.domain-name/public_html again.You should get a blank screen, but with no errors. Drag your file into the window and leave the window open while the file transfers.
