If you have an existing domain hosted elsewhere, it is important to inform your domain name registrar that you will be transferring to Hetzner’s network (domain name servers). In doing so, your registrar will redirect traffic to your new hosting location with Hetzner. To ensure a smooth transfer please follow these steps:

1. Cancel your hosting contract with your current hosting company or ISP. Your current hosting company needs to be informed in writing of exactly which services you wish to cancel or retain and the name of the domain that you will be transferring to Hetzner’s servers.


2. Settle all outstanding payments. This will ensure your ISP’s cooperation when needed.


3. Establish control over your domain name. Some ISP’s or hosting providers register your domain name into their ownership as ‘surety’ against outstanding payments. Make sure that your domain name is registered into your ownership.


4. Make use of Hetzner’s Domain Transfer Manager (DTM) tool for transfers. To access the Domain Transfer Manager tool on Hetzner’s konsoleH control panel, make sure that you have created a Hetzner profile.


5. Place a request for a full transfer to Hetzner

  1. Browse to konsoleH (http://myaccount.hetzner.co.za)
  2. Login with your Customer number or email address and Management password
  3. Select ‘NEW ORDER’ (top right)
  4. Choose ‘Domain Registration / Transfer’ (if you want to transfer the domain name) and proceed to step 5. or ‘Web hosting’, your preferred package and hosting location (for a full hosting account) and click ‘Next’
  5. Select ‘Transfer an existing domain name’ and enter the name i.e. your-domain, without the preceding www and then select the domain extension from the drop down list
  6. Click ‘Next’
  7. Enter the details of the domain owner and administrative contact
  8. Click ‘Next’
  9. Select/Confirm your payment period (only one payment method is allowed per client profile)
  10. Click ‘Next’
  11. Confirm your order details and read the ‘Terms and Conditions’
  12. Place your order

6. Manage your transfer using the Domain Transfer Manager (DTM)

  1. Browse to konsoleH (http://myaccount.hetzner.co.za)
  2. Login with your Customer number or email address and Management password
  3. Select or search for a domain name in the ‘Hosting Services’ tab
  4. Select ‘Manage Services’
  5. Select ‘Domain Transfer Manager’
  6. Choose whether you want to transfer ‘Email’ or ‘Website’
  7. Confirm that all conditions have been met
  8. Click ‘Submit’ and then ‘Confirm’ (only possible after all pre-requisites are met)
  9. A ticket will now be submitted to the registrar to start the voting process
  10. You can view your transfer progress by returning to the DTM tool
  • For international TLDs where the transfer can take up to 14 days, we recommend that you update your Domain Name Server (DNS) before you request a transfer to Hetzner. Your current DNS information can be found under ‘info’.
  • For most international TLDs you will need to instruct your current registrar to ‘unlock’ your domain for transfer. This needs to happen before you initiate the transfer process.
  • International TLDs (except for .co.za, .de, .eu) will be transferred to Hetzner’s registrar, i.e. Tucows. A renewal fee will be charged to your account upon the successful transfer of the domain.
  • An Authorisation Code will be required to action the transfer of international TLDs (all domains except .co.za, .de, .eu).
  • Please request the code from your current hosting provider.
