A digital certificate is imposed on the SSL process and acts as an electronic passport, providing proof of identity. Digital certificates are issued directly by a trusted certificate issuing authority (eg. Thawte, Verisign). A Certification Authority (CA) verifies the authenticity of the information to be included in the certificate before it is issued.
SSL & digital certificates are required when sensitive information is submitted via the Internet. Sensitive information may be in the form of Personal / Banking details, to which a user has access via a database driven website.
A digital certificate proves your company’s or server’s identity online and by doing this, creates a sense of trust and confidence in using your website.
Through the use of encryption, a digital certificate offers protection of the data submitted to your website or between servers. Should any information be intercepted, it will be unintelligible without the unique key used for decryption.
