Traffic usage is generated by data communication (transfer). This includes, but is not limited to, visitors browsing to your website (HTTP), sending and receiving email (POP, SMTP) or transferring files to or from your website (FTP).
To effectively manage your traffic usage it is recommended that you:
- Familiarise yourself with your regular traffic usage levels via the konsoleH Traffic Usage tool. The tool will help you to identify where the traffic is being generated.
- Ensure that you monitor your authorised email address for traffic usage notifications. These notifications are sent to the authorised email contact when the notification threshold is reached before incurring traffic overusage. Notifications can be managed via konsoleH.
- Analyse the traffic usage of each of the traffic types to see where the bulk of the traffic is being generated. There are various reasons why traffic is generated and it will be easier to narrow down once you know which port traffic is being generated on.
- Take the appropriate action steps (options below)
Here are some options available to you:
Change how you send mail
If you are sending out newsletters to your customers, please read our Acceptable Use Policy relating to how you may send larger volumes of email via your domains SMTP. You will be liable for the traffic generated by each mail being sent. It may be more cost effective for you to use a newsletter service or to use the SMTP of your ISP.
Move your hosting package to Germany
Hetzner makes it possible for you to host your package in Germany and reap the benefit of larger traffic usage quotas. Should your package remain on the same plan, your monthly fee will remain unchanged. Germany’s traffic quotas relating to the specific package type are available on the web hosting comparison matrix. Enjoy the benefits of hosting in Germany at a once-off restructuring fee of R49.
Upgrade to a higher package
Upgrading to a higher package will fix your increased traffic quota. This may be more convenient for you if you have noticed that your traffic use is regularly within a specific package range.
Review the pricing and features of Hetzner’s various hosting packages on the web hosting comparison matrix.
Order the Volume Plan
The generous traffic quota offered by the Volume Plan will allow you the flexibility to include or exclude accounts from your Volume Plan in its specific location. If you are not sure if this will be a cost effective option you can check its viability on the Cost Comparison tool.
Upgrade to a dedicated server
Upgrading to one of Hetzner’s dedicated server options, will provide you with a reduced traffic over-usage pricing R0.007 per MB.
You can log onto www.hetzner.co.za to read more on our dedicated hosting packages.
Alternatively, you may choose not to make any changes, Hetzner then calculates the traffic over-usage charges. Additional traffic is invoiced at a rate of R0.015 per MB for web hosting hosting packages and R0.01 per MB for the Volume Plan.
