There are various factors contributing to the high cost of bandwidth in South Africa, on top of the legacy monopoly, something that will persist locally is the size of the market.
For example, South Africa has in the region of 5 million internet users; the USA has over 200 million. This means the capital cost of installing a fibre line to a metropolitan area, is covered by a massively bigger market, resulting in lower cost per customer.
Hetzner, due to its high traffic volumes and corresponding cost margins, is able to provide cost-effective hosting packages that are hard to match elsewhere in the local market.
