The Windows operating system includes a traceroute application called ‘tracert’ (used from the MS-DOS command line). You can run a traceroute on a UNIX operating system with the ‘traceroute’ command.
To run a traceroute using Windows XP, do the following:
- Click the ‘Start’ button
- Select ‘Accessories’
- Select ‘C:// Command Prompt (MS-DOS Prompt)’
- When the C:/ prompt appears, Type ‘tracert’ and the IP address or domain name eg. tracert hetzner.co.za or tracert 41.203.23.117
- Ensure to leave a space between the tracert command and the IP address or domain name
To run a traceroute on a UNIX or Mac operating system, do the following:
- Open a terminal window
- Type ‘traceroute -I’ (capital i) and the IP address or domain name eg. traceroute -I hetzner.co.za or traceroute -I 41.203.23.117
- Ensure to leave a space between the traceroute -I command and the IP address or website address
The results of the trace will show the ‘route’ that is taken from your computer to the destination IP or website, indicating each hop along the way.
Example traceroute:
Tracing route to hetzner.co.za [41.203.23.117] over a maximum of 30 hops:
