Hetzner currently offers five different Windows Server licensing options.
The license that is best for your business depends on a few factors, such as hardware, business requirements, etc.
Each of the Windows Server license editions support a specific hardware maximum (see below) which should serve as your basic selector:
Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition, supporting
- 4 processors (CPUs)
- Up to 32 GB RAM
Windows Web Server 2008 R2 Edition, supporting
- 4 processors (CPUs)
- Up to 32 GB RAM
Windows 2003 Enterprise Server Edition, supporting
- 8 processors (CPUs)
- Up to 32 GB RAM
Windows 2003 Standard Server Edition, supporting
- 4 processors (CPUs)
- Up to 4 GB RAM
Windows 2003 Web Edition Enhanced, supporting
- 4 processors (CPUs)
- Up to 4 GB RAM2.
Let’s discuss some examples:
Scenario 1: You have the Truserv™ package and want to deploy the server as a simple web server.
Our recommendation would be to use the Windows Web Server 2008 R2.
Scenario 2: You have the Truserv™ Plus package and want to host a small Exchange server with 40 mail boxes.
Our recommendation would be to use the Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition as you will need to make use of Active Directory.
Scenario 3: You have the Truserv™ Commerce and want to deploy the server as a web server, offering HTML pages and a small SQL database.
Our recommendation would be to use the Windows Web Server 2008 R2.
Scenario 4: You have the Truserv™ Commerce and make use of Active Directory, SQL 2005 Enterprise, Exchange and require 16GB of RAM.
Our recommendation would be to use the Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition with Physical Address Extension (PAE) enabled.
Scenario 5: You have the Truserv™ Commerce and your server requirements are not limited to website or DNS hosting and you are looking for a broader spectrum of software support and server capabilities such as user decentralisation and virtualisation and require 32GB of RAM.
Our recommendation would be to use the Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition.
Users of Windows Server licenses are required to conform to the Terms and Conditions concerning the use of Microsoft software. It remains the customer’s responsibility to make sure that s/he is using the right licensing model for their usage requirements.
