Hetzner makes use of the Apache privilege separation with SuExec and Fcgid to ensure that our customers’ source code is secure.
In order to continue to support PHP5 under SuExec, it is essential that we make use of Fcgid. While Fcgid is traditionally known as a performance enhancement technology, it is not an optional extra in our environment. We use SuExec to secure customers’ source code. In order to implement this security enhancement, we use Fcgid to support SuExec.
The benefits of these security features include:
- SuExec makes it easier to identify processes that belong to each customer
- SuExec makes it easier to identify where a customer’s email originated from
- Fcgid provides a dramatic performance improvement for PHP5
