New technology rolled out on the Cape Town peering link to SAIX
Verizon Business, Hetzner’s exclusive upstream provider, has completed a new technology upgrade on their Cape Town peering link to SAIX. This change involved upgrading Verizon’s peering link to SAIX from ATM interfaces to Next Generation Gig-Ethernet technology, known as NG-SDH technology.
Essentially this new technology upgrade will ensure that Hetzner’s customers enjoy better response times when going to or coming from the Telkom network.
This upgrade holds the following benefits for Hetzner and its customers:
- Efficient use of bandwidth:The previous ATM link put additional pressure on IP traffic. The new NG-SDH link eliminates this pressure while at the same time increases the amount of accessible bandwidth.
- Scalable & Seamless upgrades: NG-SDH technology allows Verizon to utilise a Gigabit Ethernet fibre interface from any speed up to 1 Gigabit per second. This technology also makes upgrades seamless as bandwidth only needs to be added to the central pool of bandwidth on the network, rather than to every exchange along the required network path. Upgrades can now take place without any interruption to Hetzner customers.
- Increased protection: The new technology offers better protection for Hetzner customers against Telkom failures as the new architecture provides Verizon with an exclusive, redundant path on the Telkom network.
